February 24, 2005Borgata Servers Can’t Tip the Scales

It’s been said there’s no such thing as bad publicity. But in this case, I’m not so sure. Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has been taking a lot of heat since last Friday when it announced that, starting this past Monday, it was going to have weigh-in of its “Borgata Babes”, people you’ve probably been foolishly calling cocktail waitresses (and waiters too. The names people will let themselves be called for a job….)
Those who gain more than seven percent of their body weight — Borgata did not say over what time period — will get pink-slips. That’s right, canned, fired, thrown out on their, apparently fat, you-know-what’s for packing on the lbs.
And here’s the kicker: those who get axed will be given up to 90 days to lose the weight during an UNPAID suspension.
The following articles talk about whether this qualifies as discrimination. Truthfully, I imagine that many companies already hire based on appearance…they just don’t put it in writing.
But what I really want to know is, while these ‘Babes’ are recovering from humiliation during these 90-day suspensions, will Borgata at least spring for a 3-month gym membership?
