March 18, 2009Obama's Town-Hall Meetings

Couldn’t help but chuckle when I read today’s AP headline, “Obama heads to California for town-hall meetings.” This is a president who understands the importance of getting in front of his constituents and explaining his vision; exactly what today’s CEOs should be applauded for doing, not dragged through the media’s mudpile. How will the economy ever turn around if companies, TARP recipients and not, are not allowed to get out there and meet with their teams?

President Obama has not said to not have meetings but he has clearly said if you take TARP money you cannot waste it on lavish events which are very different than standard business meetings. Why must everyone try to manipulate the Presidents words as I for one do not want my tax dollars wasted on what we (better than anyone else) know is in fact wasteful self indulgent parties. No one is complaining about holding standard business meeetings.

David, the problem is the general public and many politicians do not understand the differences we do, and that's why the recent political rhetoric affects standard business meetings, even unintentionally. The consequence--companies canceling their business meetings, en masse, for fear of being misinterpreted--is all too real, however. Perception becomes reality. Our lobbyists are working in DC to make sure the differences between over-the-top events and "real" business meetings are understood, and that these differences are clarified, by the President and others.
