Spa services have been making headlines in recent weeks. Newspapers, magazines, Internet sites, even “Saturday Night Live,” have mentioned AIG’s $23,380 spa bill during an incentive jaunt to the St. Regis Resort in Monarch Beach, California, just a week after the $85 billion government bailout.

There may be a worldwide credit crisis, but life goes on and to deal with the stress, spas have developed some truly luxurious treatments.

A New Way to Feng Shui

Recently, I attended a Four Seasons event at the Four Seasons here in New York. The event showcased all the improvements that the company has made and is making to its properties. (In the past year 17 resorts have been redone and many more are in store; Four Seasons has spent $725 million on recent and current renovations and plans to spend another $248 million by 2010.)

In keeping with the makeover theme, Billy Yamaguchi was also at the event. Yamaguchi is a Feng Shui Master who has built a salon company with several locations in California, including one at the Four Seasons in Westlake Village. At this event, Yamaguchi was giving free Feng Shui consultations—for your appearance, not your living space. He explained his philosophy of integrating the elements and principles of the ancient tradition with those of Western hair design and then gave me some interesting advice on how to wear my hair, on what colors to wear most, and even on what style of dress works best for me.

Yamguchi created this new discipline of Feng Shui for beauty, hair design, and harmony. He's written a book called Billy Yamaguchi Feng Shui Beauty. And he also is available for meetings and events. He can give a speech, individual consultations, or both.

Xelasticks I find that in the chaotic, everyday life many of us lead, a good spa treatment goes a long way--especially for those with heavy travel schedules. I recently attended EXTRACTS, a beauty and wellness show at the Penn Plaza Pavilion in NYC; the event was part of the New York International Gift Fair being held at the Javits Convention Center this week.

The wholesalers I spoke to said they were having a successful show, and that hotels and spas were very interested in the innovative products that are emerging in 2006. Interestingly..

Surrounded by Nature

Last week, I had the opportunity to sample The Spa at Mohonk Mountain House, which debuted in August 2005. Mohonk Mountain House, located in New Paltz, NY, is a national historic landmark dating back to 1869. It features rustic yet Victorian-style accommodations and is encompassed by natural surroundings of mountains, quartz cliffs, and a beautiful, clear lake. The new facility spans over 30,000 square feet and features 16 spa treatment rooms, an 80-foot-long glass enclosed veranda that serves as the relaxation lounge, a solarium with a stone fireplace which offers views of the mountains and lake, a heated outdoor mineral pool, a beauty salon, a fitness center, indoor pool, and an ice-skating rink. Wrapped up in my cozy white robe and slippers, I relished every minute of time in the veranda area where I lounged on Adirondack lounging chairs overlooking trees and mountains—I truly felt like I was in a luxury treehouse!

The resort offers teambuilding events for groups like human foosball and cardboard regattas where teams have to build a raft out of cardboard and sail it on the lake. It also offers wine pairing and cooking classes, and trips to local wineries and excursions to the "Gunks," an area for exceptional rockclimbing. The cast of Saturday Night Live  comes annually for its brainstorming sessions, and I would say, it is an ideal setting for New Yorkers to plan executive and teambuilding retreats, since it’s only 90 miles north the city and it is nature at its core.
